Education Africa and Sustainable Architecture
An Education Africa Project

Weilers Farm

Weilers Farm is an extraordinarily poor township near Orange Farm that lacks even the most basic necessities such as running water. In late 2004, a representative of the Department of Social Affairs, Mrs Helen Ggoba approached Education Africa to assist by building a preschool facility in the township to be run by Sarah Ngwena, an extremely respected woman in the community. At that time Sarah was running the preschool on community property in Weilers Farm for about 60 children. The children attending her school lack practically everything. They stay in shacks and have little or no toys, or educational materials.

Hearing of her plight, the Technical University of Graz became highly motivated to assist Sarah and these children. Twenty two, second year architecture students from the university thus spent some months designing a wonderful preschool to be built on this community property, to replace the shack from which the preschool was run. In February 2006, these students flew out to South Africa at their own expense, to build the school with their own hands. Not only did they pay their own way to get to here, they also raised funds in Austria to purchase building materials (see www.Weilers Farm.net for photographs).

The students were accommodated for the period of their stay by FNB at the FNB Training Centre in Sandton. The FNB EXCO, including FNB CEO Michael Jordaan visited the project site for a day to assist with building.

Building of the facilty was completed in March 2006 and the brand new preschool facility, consisting of an office, a kitchen, toilets and 3 big classrooms was handed over to the community by the Austrian students in a celebratory ceremony on the 5th of March 2006. Since then, Education Africa has delivered a number of soft and educational toys to the pre-school, all of which were sourced by Christa Spanseiler from donors in Austria. Christa is an Austrian living in South Africa for two years. She works for Education Africa in a voluntary capacity on the SA project.
