| Education Africa and Sustainable Architecture An Education Africa Project |
Montic Primary School Montic Primary School is a farm primary school situated near a dairy factory in the south of Johannesburg. The factory is owned by Mr Kebert, an Austrian man who has taken an interest in assisting the local community . Through his ties to Austria, Mr Kebert and the "Fachhochshule Salzburg" in Austria designed a skills centre for the local community which they built in February and March 2006 at Montic Primary School with the aim of assisting the very poor families of the children who attend the school and live in neighbouring townships.As the national need for school facilities is so vast, the South African government only provides limited subsidies to schools. Thus, in his personal capacity as factory owner, Mr Kebert currently supports this school with electricity and other materials. In addition, he volunteered to oversee and assist with this project, in collaboration with Education Africa, as well as with the German RWTH Aachen project that is explained in more detail below. Montic Dairy, through Mr Kebert also supported the project by supplying transportation and by supplying building material for the students to use during construction. The surrounding community needed this skill centre desperately in order to gain skills to find jobs and improve the quality of their lives and to create a better future for their children. During February and March the students built the centre which includes a large veranda, a kitchen, various workspaces, a sewing room and covered spaces for various activities. The centre will provide skills to the children at the school as well as to their parents. Dustin Tusnovic, an Austrian architecture lecturer and Michelle Riedmatten, who has been to South Africa in 2004 and in 2005 to oversee and build the Modimo O Moholo project, oversaw the building of this facility. The students stayed in a resort near the project, and their accommodation was sponsored by Montic Dairy.
