Education Africa and Sustainable Architecture
An Education Africa Project

Background
In the last decade, NPO Education Africa has developed excellent partnerships and contacts in The City of Vienna and in the broader Austrian community. The funds raised from The City of Vienna and Austrian business resulted in a fully-fledged primary school - known as Masibambane College - being built in Orange Farm.

Due to outreach programmes which reach over 20 000 people, Education Africa and Masibambane College have established strong partnerships with a number of community organisations in Orange Farm and surrounding areas. These include partnerships with under-resourced pre-schools run by dedicated people in the community, as well as with organisations assisting mentally and physically disabled children and adults.

Due to these solid partnerships in the past two years, Austrian universities and funders have become increasingly involved in funding and volunteering to assist Education Africa and Masibambane College's outreach partnerships to construct facilities for the poorest of the poor.

Thus Austrian support has developed into Education Africa's Sustainable Architecture project, which has been changing more and more lives of disadvantaged people living in Orange Farm, Weilersfarm and Kliprivier. Read on to see how…

Executive Summary
Since 2004, university students from five Austrian universities have made a meaningful contribution to disadvantaged communities in South Africa by designing and constructing buildings using simple, inexpensive, locally available building materials while applying innovative, experimental solutions. This Sustainable Architecture Project is an ongoing collaboration between Education Africa and the Austrian NPO S²Arch (Social and Sustainable Architecture).

First National Bank supported the project by sponsoring accommodation and meals for the students. In 2006, FNB has come on board in support of the project by providing the same for some of the university student groups. FNB also sent teams of its employees to work for a day on the project sites as part of the First Rand Volunteer Programme.

To date The Sustainable Architecture Project has completed and delivered the following projects:

  1. Modimo O Moholo
  2. Masibambane College
  3. Tebogo Home for Mentally and Physically Handicapped Children
