On 19 September 1995, Education Africa launched the official President NR Mandela Presidential Medallions at the South African Mint. James Urdang, executive director of Education Africa, presented a 1 oz proof medallion to Walter Sisulu and a 5 oz fine gold proof medallion to Nelson Mandela. A second series of Presidential Medallions was launched in 1997.
