It is an established fact that there is a tremendous constraint on South Africa's long-term economic growth due to the lack of management skills in the country, particularly among the black population. In order to assist the training of these managers, Education Africa helped initiate the African Management Programme.

The content of the programme is the result of thorough research by the business sector. It is a programme developed for South Africans by South Africans, and includes many aspects of management which are indigenous to the country.

The Programme in Business Focused Management has been specifically designed to achieve the following:
  • Train and develop disadvantaged persons to be effective business and management leaders.
  • Facilitate the process of making business indigenous.
  • Promote awareness of managerial leadership for economic advancement and empowerment.
  • Uphold and enhance the highest possible standards and principles in business and managerial leadership.
  • Enhance youth development.
  • Affirm people in the marketplace.

Among the greatest challenges still being faced by South Africa and one which lies at the very heart of all its socio-economic problems is the creation of jobs. We simply do not have the capacity to absorb current job-seekers into the existing formal economy.

Education Africa believes that one of the best ways of addressing this problem is to develop entrepreneurial skills for those who are out of work. In short, if you cannot be absorbed into the existing formal economy, you should be able to start your own business, and in this way, assist economic growth and create employment for yourself and others.

It was with this in mind that the Certification in Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management was created in 1997 with funding from Education Africa. This programme aims at providing potential entrepreneurs with the necessary knowledge and skills to establish a business of their own.

The nine-month certificate course consists of the following four modules:
  • Introduction to entrepreneurship.
  • Entering the business world.
  • The business plan.
  • Managing the small business.
