Education Africa, an association not for gain, was established in 1992 with the objective, under the then apartheid government, of addressing two of the most critical educational issues facing South Africa's marginalised communities, ie accessibility to quality education and relevance of their education.

When South Africa's first democratically elected president, Nelson Mandela, identified education as one of the central pillars of the country's Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP), Education Africa set out to assist in trying to re-establish a culture of learning in South Africa. And under the leadership of President Thabo Mbeki, we have constantly strived to help deliver Africa's Education Renaissance in South Africa.

So while our mission may have changed slightly over the years to move with the times, our initial objectives have not: to assist disadvantaged South Africans in their quest to obtain a quality, relevant education in order to ensure that they are in a position to become global citizens and a competitive force in the local job market. The upside for the country as a whole is that an educated nation is a progressive nation that will be in a position to sustain economic growth.

Education Africa's head office is based in Johannesburg, South Africa. However, we also have registered offices in the USA and the UK which are self-sustainable, and we are also receiving direct assistance through our relationships in Japan and Austria. The American operation, Education Africa USA Inc, is a non-profit, tax-exempt 501 (3) C organisation. Professor Dani Venter is the chairman of Education Africa EU and he is assisted by Mrs Larie Rohan-Irwin Venter and Colin Walker. The team at the Johannesburg head office is led by James Urdang, who is both the executive director and founder of Education Africa. Known for his ability to "make things happen" and for his tireless commitment to the task at hand, James is an inspiration to those who work with him and know him.

Linda Gould is the operations director of Education Africa. She has been with the organisation since its inception and has played an integral part in its success.

Education Africa is proud of its track record and its many successful projects. We have singled out some of the major ones and have featured these on the website.
